International meeting place for the development of contemporary music
The Kalv festival is a yearly contemporary music festival that since its inception in 2004 has explored the world of experimental new music in the beautiful countryside south-east of Gothenburg, through show-casing interdisciplinary and pedagogical projects, work-shops as well as commissioning and staging some of the most important musical works of the last century. A feature which has placed the festival as one of the key contemporary music festivals of Sweden and integrated it socially and culturally in the local regional life.

Om evenemanget
I den mörka timmen är en ritual för att möta mörkret, Les Ténèbres: det är ett möte med sig själv. I den mörka timmen är specifikt utarbetad för Kalv: dess kyrka, dess ort, dess människor och dess festival.
Titeln är hämtad från det nionde avsnittet av Olivier Messiaens sista verk för orgel, Le Livre du Saint -Sacrament (Boken om det heliga sakramentet), som utgör grunden för det musikaliska innehållet. Föreställningen är filosofiskt förankrad i Heideggers begrepp vara-mot-döden, där ett möte med sin egen rädsla och smärta kan ses som en öppning av igenkänning; en möjlighet att bli verklig, att bli oss själva.
Performancekonstnären och organisten Liv Kristin Holmberg har sedan många år fördjupat sig i skärningspunkten mellan det teologiska och det konstnärliga. De senaste åren under samlingsnamnet Konstliturgin har flera skiftande projekt vuxit fram som utmanar och uppmanar till upptäckten av det andliga och det konstnärliga på ett djupt omskakande vis. Så här skriver Liv Kristin själv:
” Konstliturgin skulle kunna beskrivas som en rituell musikteater baserad på en utopisk filosofi, där jag utvecklar nya liturgiska element för existentiella händelser och livsövergångar: En sorts metafysisk teater av det verkliga. Min konstnärliga bakgrund som kyrkomusiker och performancekonstnär är kärnan i en mångårig scenkonst- och performativ praktik, där jag undersöker kantorns roll som rituell mästare.”

About the performance
It is a ritual for meeting the darkness, Les Ténèbres: a meeting with oneself. In the dark hour is specifically prepared for Kalv: its church, its place, its people and its festival.
The title is taken from the ninth section of Olivier Messiaen’s final work for organ, Le Livre du Saint -Sacrament (The Book of the Holy Sacrament), which provides the basis of the musical content. The performance is philosophically grounded in Heidegger’s concept of being- towards-death, where an encounter with one’s own fear and pain can be thought of as an opening of recognition; an opportunity to become real, to become ourselves.
The performance artist and organist Liv Kristin Holmberg has for many years immersed herself in the intersection between the theological and the artistic. In recent years, under the collective name Art Liturgy, several diverse projects have emerged that challenge and invite the discovery of the spiritual and the artistic in a profoundly shocking way. This is how Liv Kristin herself writes:
” The Art Liturgy could be described as a ritualistic musical theatre based on utopian philosophy, wherein I develop new liturgical elements for existential events and life transitions: A sort of metaphysical theatre of the real. My artistic background as a church musician and performance artist is the core of a long-standing stage art-, and performative practice, in which I investigate the cantor’s role as a ritual master..”
